The fig's outer flesh is beautifully coloured, but in terms of light, is curiously dull. The surface is largely non reflective and has a matt look to it. The choice of a black background was deliberate to enhance this characteristic of the fruit. By choosing subtle dark colours for the shadowed areas, the fig gently sinks into the background giving a slightly surreal quality to the painting. |
